Some of the deep technical stuff seems to have struck a chord so we'll do a little more. This week we're looking at some of the settings in the Dex.ini file. This file holds a number of key GP settings. Many of them are available via the program interface but some are not. This is NOT intended to be a comprehensive list of every possible Dex.ini line. But if you think I missed something, add it to the comments and we'll build a full list together.

Since the release of Microsoft Dynamics GP v10.0 I have seen this question asked many times over on the various newsgroups I monitor (see the Newsgroups Links on the left hand panel of the blog).

The quick answer is.... it has moved into the Data subfolder.

Now that I have figured out that I can't attach a file to this blog, I thought now would be a good time to add more to the list. Hopefully I haven't included any repeats (or if I did I gave the same explanation).

ADCProcessor=TRUE
You will see this line in the Dex.ini file if you are using Manufacturing and have the checkbox marked in ADC Preferences.

AdvLookups=FALSE
New Users created will NOT be granted access to the Alternate lookup windows in the SmartList dictionary and will instead be assigned the old ‘green bar’ lookup windows.

AllowBCPTest=FALSE
Prevents utilities from running the BCP test.

AllowWrongDex=TRUE
Will allow Dynamics GP to launch with mis-matched versions of dexterity. This switch can get you in trouble, so make sure you know if this is OK. It should NOT be used just to get rid of the error. If you are getting the error, something is amiss.

ApplicationName=name
Changes the name the runtime engine displays when it is launched. Without this setting the name “Dexterity Runtime” is displayed. Kind of fun, but you have to watch carefully because this isn't displayed for very long.

AutoDisplayUpdate=TRUE
Automatically redisplays the process monitor queue.

AutoInstallChunks=TRUE
Causes Dynamics to automatically include the *.cnk file not prompting the user for 'Add New Code to Dynamics.set' during launch.

BTInterface=NoLoad
This applied to the old Btrieve file handler (PSQL 2000) as to whether the interface would load when Dynamics was launched. This one only applies to versions 7.5 or before, assuming PSQL 2000 is being used. It's out of date, but hey, it was on the list.

Buildphantom=TRUE
Allows creation of a Manufacturing Order for a Finished Good Phantom Item.

BuildSQLMessages=TRUE
This one will copy the Dexterity messages to a SQL table on next login and then it will set it back to FALSE. Once in a SQL table the messages can be used in stored procedures. The table is DYNAMICS.dbo.MESSAGES. Give this one a try, it's pretty neat. It's also a very good way to easily 'browse' all of the message resources. If you have Modifier, these are fun to change. I especially like changing the droll descriptions Check Links adds to recovered records. Be sure to keep track of what you changed so you can change it back if you did something for a laugh.

I recently received an inquiry about a GP 10 installation that suddenly stopped working. While posting a batch, GP had crashed, and would not launch again.

When the user tried to launch GP, they would receive a message saying that GP Utilities need to be run first: "You need to run Microsoft Dynamics GP Utilities before you can run Microsoft Dynamics GP."



But when GP Utilities launched, it then said that the Dynamics system database did not exist, and it had to be setup. "The Microsoft Dynamics GP system database has not been created for this installation."



It was as if GP had just disappeared from the machine and SQL Server.

Puzzled over this, I then checked the SQL Server to confirm that the databases did in fact exist. The database files were present, SQL Server Management Studio displayed them, and I could query them…

Over the years I've collected a number of dex.ini switches. I love these things. I'd been beating my head against the wall for 2 or 3 hours and somone comes by and says 'Oh, that's just an ini switch.' An .ini switch can control all sorts of things. From where to look for the help file to turning off that nagging reminder about the sample company date. Some of my favorite switches are below. Since, I can't figure out how to attach a text file to this blog, I'll make this a multi-part post and eventually cover all of them in my list. ShowAdvancedMacroMenu=TRUE When you get that message that says your macro failed on line 65,423 you can use this to open your macro and jump right to the line of failure for analysis. Being a frequent user of the 'Mail Merge' macro, this tool is used frequently to find out what went wrong. Another cool thing about this is that it lets you start a macro in the middle, also there's no separate .cnk to install. A simple .ini switch does the trick! DISALLOWSNLOTAOF=TRUE Prevents users from being able to "create" new lot numbers or serial numbers while transferring an item from one site to another. Version 10 now has a setup option that disallows this, but the box is not automatically checked. GP is good about not changing the old functionality (really, I mean this) so be sure to check your setup screens after each update or SP for new settings.
